Why I Tithe

by Johnson Bowie
We have a generous God! In giving us His son, Jesus, He gave us His BEST. When we come face-to-face with the selfless love of God and embrace it, we take on His nature and become givers, too. Because when we truly grasp just how much God cherishes us and then open ourselves up to Him, we will want to give as an expression of our adoration. In Extravagant part three, we’re making room for God to transform our hearts, minds and our finances so we can offer Him a worthy response to the extravagant love He has for us!
Sermon Notes

“There are three conversions necessary: the conversion of the heart, the conversion of the mind, and the conversion of the purse.” – Martin Luther

Malachi 3:8-12 NKJV
“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says the Lord of hosts; “And all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land,” says the Lord of hosts.

We give TO GOD through THE CHURCH.

Psalm 37:25 NIV
I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.

Why I Tithe

  1. I see the Principle of FIRST throughout the Bible.

Genesis 4:3-5 NLT
When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented SOME of his crops as a gift to the Lord. Abel also brought a gift—the BEST portions of the FIRSTBORN lambs from his flock. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.

Proverbs 3:9-10 NIV
Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

Matthew 6:33 NKJV
Seek FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

“There is within the human heart a tough, fibrous root of fallen life whose nature is to possess, always to possess. It covets things with a deep and fierce passion.” – A. W. Tozer

Why I Tithe

  • I want to position my family for God’s blessing.

Malachi 3:8-11 NKJV
“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “See if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says the Lord of hosts.

Why I Tithe

  • I really trust our church.

Why I Tithe

  • I want to show a thankful heart to God.

Exodus 13:14 NIV
“In days to come, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.’”

When God gives, He gives extravagantly. After all, He loved us so much that gave His only son to save us! He doesn’t withhold anything good from us, and He desires that we walk in the same spirit toward others. We’re called to live generous lives that bring God glory. The idea is that we would all begin to give in such a way that we reflect our Father to the world around us! May our acts of giving be a sign of our hearts toward the Father. Tune in to part five of Extravagant!

Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” God owns everything and, in His kindness, entrusts us to wisely manage the resources He provides. But what exactly does it mean to be a good steward, and where do we start? And could it be that God wants us to handle money well so we can be as generous as He has been to us? In Extravagant part four, we’re giving you practical tools to partner with Him in your finances and, ultimately, be a blessing to others!
